Vasectomy reversal surgery takes a considerable amount of time, generally lasting between 2 and 3 hours. While the extent of the surgery is not a great deal more than a vasectomy, it is nevertheless time-consuming due to the precision placement of microsurgical sutures.
The surgery can be performed with a combination of local anesthesia and conscious sedation. Dr. Finnerty has performed hundreds of cases in this manner, in most cases with very good success. However, a small percentage of patients (about 5%) do not respond well to this approach, and become restless or uncomfortable. Should this happen, it may have a negative impact on the outcome of surgery.
As a result, Dr. Finnerty now requires general anesthesia in all cases of vasectomy reversal surgery. Using current outpatient anesthesia techniques, this is extremely safe, and recovery is typically smooth and comfortable for most patients.
